For a very long time I was saddened to realise that two
of my favourite interests, agriculture and ecology seemed to conflict each
other on so many fronts. Permaculture, a system of growing food based on natural
ecology has been a revelation to me in recent times and has also influenced my
approach to landscape architecture. The most powerful vision that Permaculture
materialises for me is the idea of a high tech modern world living in smaller
less dense communities. Communities which trade recourses and skills diluting
societies need for material wealth and could help counter many of the social
misgivings of high density environments.
